British super-middleweight champion Paul Smith will not be taking on Welshman Tobias Webb in his latest defence of the Lonsdale Belt as the British Board have turned down a request by promter Eddie Hearn.
Instead, the 31 year-old two-time title holder has been put forward for a mouth-watering all-Liverpool battle with Commonwealth and former Pizefighter champion Rocky Fielding.
Smith is due to fight at the Echo Arena on March 15, but with Fielding fighting Tony Dodson on the same bill, it is now up in the air as to what will transpire at the Echo Arena next month.
Purse bids have been set for March 12 by the BBBofC for what would be a massive Merseyside two-belt title clash, with the stipulation added that the fight takes place no later than the end of May.
In other British title news, Jon-Lewis Dickinson’s defence against Neil Dawson has been confirmed for March 29 in Gateshead, whilst Nick Blackwell has been put forward for a rematch with Billy Joe Saunders.
The first fight between the two middleweights ended in an entertaining unanimous decision for Saunders in December 2012, although Blackwell was by no means overawed against the world title prospect.
