Mayweather next opponent poll update: Maidana 57% Khan 43%

Floyd Mayweather has officially opened the voting for his next opponent on the Mayweather Promotions website. Marcos Maidana heads into an early lead in the opposite corner to the pound-for-pound best on May 3.

‘Money’ has made the poll visible to anyone who casts their vote at mayweatherpromotions.com, although it has not been clear whether the massive outpour from Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram fans will count towards his decision.

Currently, WBA champion Maidana holds the advantage (at 5 am ET/10 am UK on February 5) by some 1300 plus votes, with Khan polling almost 4,500 since the system was put in place on the TMT website on Tuesday.

Mayweather has set no time limit for an official announcement on his spring fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a precedent set by the 36-year-old for choosing who is handed the massive paycheck.

Maidana has been the choice of many since rumors spread late last year that Khan had already agreed on a deal with Floyd, but if the Argentine does come out on top, his British rival and the former opponent will have made a career mistake. Khan has delayed any activity in the ring in anticipation of landing the Mayweather fight. At this stage in his career, a year without fighting can have a damaging effect – ask Victor Ortiz.

The former Olympic silver medallist also turned down a world title fight with Devon Alexander to prepare for his expected shot at Mayweather, and whether another chance like that will come again at this stage is debatable.
