‘Money’ has made the poll visible to anyone who casts their vote at mayweatherpromotions.com, although has not been clear as to whether the massive outpour from fans on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram will count towards his decision.
At the moment, WBA champion Maidana holds the advantage (at 5am ET/10am UK on February 5) by some 1300 plus votes, with Khan polling almost 4,500 since the system was put in place on the TMT website on Tuesday.
There has been no time limit set by Mayweather for an official announcement on his spring fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, in what has been a precedent set by the 36 year-old for choosing who is handed the massive paycheck.
Maidana has been the choice of many since rumours spread late last year that Khan had already agreed a deal with Floyd, but if the Argentine does come out on top, his British rival and former opponent will have made a career mistake. Khan has delayed any activity in the ring in anticipation of landing the Mayweather fight, and at this stage in his career, a year without fighting can have a damaging effect – just ask Victor Ortiz.
The former Olympic silver medallist also turned down a world title fight with Devon Alexander to prepare for his expected shot at Mayweather and whether another chance like that will come again at this stage is debatable.
