Stevenson v Fonfara talks go well, deal close for May 24

As reported on World Boxing News on Monday, Margules had a meeting with Stevenson’s promoter Yvon Michel on Tuesday, and after further negotiations, the fight is expected to go through for May 24 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

US-base Pole Fonfara, 26, is undefeated since a 2008 defeating to Derrick Findley, having won 25 of his 28 bouts, and now gets the chance to challenge for the coveted green belt after a short reign as IBO title holder in 2012.

On the other hand, 36 year-old Stevenson is widely regarded as the number one in the division and was linked to a fight with heavy-handed Russian Sergey Kovalev until Fonfara was lined up instead.

‘Superman’ Stevenson burst onto the scene with a crushing win over Chad Dawson in June of last year and has since dispatched of Tavoris Cloud and Tony Bellew to extend his knockout run to ten straight fights.

“We are close to making the fight for May 24 at the Bell Centre and should know more soon,” Margules confirmed to World Boxing News on Thursday morning.
