Amnat Ruenroeng completes prison turnaround with world title victory

Phil Jay 22/01/2014

Thailand’s Amnat Ruenroeng delighted his home crowd at the Liptapanlop Hall after claiming the vacant IBF flyweight title by out-pointing the experienced Rocky Fuentes in just his twelfth professional fight.

The 34 year-old was handed scores of 117-111, 116-112 (twice) on the three ringside judges’ scorecards and completes a remarkable turnaround following a fifteen year jail sentence earlier in his life.

Ruenroeng took up the sport while serving his time behind bars, before embarking on a successful amateur career and eventually entering the paid ranks in May 2012.

The Si Racha born fighter even holds a victory over current two-weight world champion Kazuto Ioka from his time in the headguard and vest – as a world title rematch now becomes a distinct possibility between the two.
