IBF Chairman: Ruling soon on Groves appeal for Froch return

British fighter George Groves is waiting to find out the result of his appeal for an instant return with domestic rival Carl Froch from the IBF.

The 25 year-old, who pushed Froch all the way until stopped controversially in the ninth round, has made his case with IBF to be given a second chance at ‘The Cobra’ last week and will find out the results by the end of this week.

“George Groves filed an Appeal with the IBF and subsequently a hearing was held on January 15, 2014, in Newark, New Jersey,” Tucker exclusively told World Boxing News.

“In his appeal, Mr. Groves asked for an immediate re-match with Carl Froch, which the IBF is currently considering.

“Groves will get the results of that appeal within ten days of January 15, 2014.”

CARL FROCH vs GEORGE GROVES

Froch, 36, has made it clear that another meeting with Groves is not in his immediate thinking, even though the Nottingham fighter walked away from Manchester Arena with a hollow ninth-round TKO on his record.

The three-time world champion is thought to be keen on some of the bigger names in the division like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or even ex-opponent Andre Ward, although the IBF could take that choice out of his hands if he wants to keep his red belt.

Should the IBF make a ruling for Groves, that still wouldn’t automatically mean the two would share a ring again – as Froch could decide to vacate his title as he still holds the WBA’s ‘regular’ version from his win over Mikkel Kessler last May.
