Chris Evangelou loses Frank Warren debut, drops third fight in a row

Former Southern Area light-welterweight title challenger Chris’ The Flash’ Evangelou is coming to terms with another worrying defeat after going down to Ashley Mayall on his maiden bout under Frank Warren.

Warren snapped up Evangelou and his elder brother Andreas earlier this year after the Enfield fighter lost twice to Danny Connor in his first career title bout and was a favourite to overcome Mayall at Copper Box Arena.

The contest was touted as a rebuilding contest for Evangelou as Warren nurtured the slick boxer back up the rankings, although the unthinkable happened and Mayall triumphed 59-56 on the referee’s scorecard.

Evangelou has now suffered three defeats on the spin since stepping up in class and it could be a hard road back for the 27 year-old, who needs to score a win to stop the rot setting into his career.

Mayall, 20, pushes his record to four wins and three losses and keeps up his win-lose-win-lose ratio with what was a surprise win for the Oldham man.

Brother Andreas restored some family pride later in the evening when he out-point Mitch Mitchell by the same score to move on to 8-0-1.

Earlier in the night, Gary’s Corcoran and Cornish kept up their unbeaten records with stoppage victories over Dai Jones and Ivica Perkovic and move on to 7-0 and 17-0 respectively.
