McDonnell, Smith and Fielding score stoppages on Froch v Groves

Former IBF bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell halted Bernard Inom in seven rounds as the Doncaster fighter made an impressive start to his career with new promoter Eddie Hearn.

McDonnell had Inom in trouble on more than one occasion in the bout and ended the one-sided fight in the seventh with some hurtful body punches.

The Yorkshireman moves his record to 22-2-1 and moves closer to another shot at a world title following the IBF’s decision to strip McDonnell of the red belt.

Stephen Smith defeated Sergio Manuel Medina in a contest that was awful viewing as the Argentine did everything he could to make the bout a scrappy affair.

Medina, 31, used some unsavoury tactics to take the fight into the later stages until a super body shot from Smith in the eighth put the South American down for the ten count.

Also featuring on the bill, Rocky Fielding produced a great left hook to knock out late substitute Luke Blackledge in the early bout of the card as the Liverpool fighter successfully defended his Commonwealth super-middleweight title.

The 26 year-old former Prizefighter champion improved to 17-0 with his 10th career stoppage and could now be in line for a shot at the coveted British title in the coming months.

In the opening bout of the evening, Scott Cardle alos kept up his unbeaten record against Krzysztof Szot with a straightforward 60-54 points win.
