Etches blasts out Mendes in one, Yafai, Smith and Jenkins win in Sheffield

Adam Etches had far too much for Alexandre Mendes as the ‘Bomber’ picked up the little-regarded IBF Youth super-middleweight title with a routine first round stoppage in his hometown of Sheffield.

Thee 22 year-old came out swinging from the off and had Mendes in trouble almost immediately, with the referee contemplating ending the contest after just one minute of Etches punishment.

The end came in the dying moments of the opening session as Mendes’ corner decided to save their fighter any further punishment to the Brazilian’s dismay ending his previously unbeaten record.

Etches moves on to 13-0 with another impressive win and can look forward to being matched with some bigger names in the future, one of which could be Chris Eubank Jr.

Earlier in the night, Kal Yafai scored a comprehensive six-round victory over Santiago Bustos with the tally at the end of the fight reading 59-55 in favour of the super-flyweight prospect.

The 24 year-old, who hasn’t fought in seven months, is now 9-0 with six stoppages after this latest win.

Also on the Motorpoint Arena bill, Callum Smith came through his toughest test to date to knockout the experienced Ruben Acosta in the sixth round with some sweet left hooks to the body, whilst Scott Jenkins took five rounds to halt Antonio Rodriguez.
