Makabu halts Fields in five rounds, stoppages for Liebenberg and Joyi

WBC Silver cruiserweight champion Junior Makabu remains so after delivering a crushing knockout win over American Eric Fields at Emperor’s Palace in Gauteng, South Africa.

The Congo-born southpaw, who improved his record to 15-1 with the win, proved far too strong for 31 year-old Fields following a sluggish start to the contest – which only warmed up from the third round onwards.

Makabu, 25, began unloading hurtful shots on Fields after a drab first two rounds and gradually softened the Oklahoma fighter up until delivering a telling left hook midway through the fifth to end the contest.

Also on the bill, former world minimumweight champion Nkosinathi Joyi took care of Benezer Alolod in eight rounds to record a first win since losing to Hekkie Budler in June and moves on to 24-2 with a seventeenth stoppage win.

Light-heavyweight Ryno Liebenberg is still undefeated by dispatching of Gabriel Ramirez in just one round, having put the Argentinian on the floor twice in the fight. The 29 year-old moves his record to 15-0 with 10 KO’s.
