Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has confirmed to WBN that Abner Mares wants an immediate return with Jhonny Gonzalez after losing his WBC featherweight title in spectacular fashion last weekend.
The 27 year-old was knocked out in the first round of their California clash, losing for the first time in his career in the process and Schaefer is now working out the details of whether the rematch with Gonzalez is possible in the short term.
“Abner Mares wants to do the rematch,” Schaefer told World Boxing News today.
“Mares informed me of his decision yesterday and now I have to see when it can happen.”
The experienced Gonzalez, 31, reclaimed the title he held from 2011-2012 following his loss in a one-sided technical decision against Daniel Ponce De Leon in what was an uncharacteristically bad night for him.
Since that defeat the Mexican has won two low-key affairs to ready himself for the Mares challenge, which Gonzalez went into as a huge underdog and nobody predicted what would ensue in the ring.
Gonzalez impressively registered the 47th stoppage in what was his 63rd bout and will soon know whether his first defence will be a second clash with Mares, containing a considerably bigger purse this time around.
