Ex-world champion Nathan Cleverly’s father and current trainer Vince is open to the idea of approaching a new coach for his son after the Welshman’s four-round loss to Sergey Kovalev last weekend in Cardiff.
Vince has even named compatriot and Wales legend Joe Calzaghe as a potential replacement for himself as he contemplates the next move for Nathan on the back of what was his first defeat as a professional.
“Perhaps Joe Calzaghe, the undefeated and Nath to team up?” questioned Vince.
“I really think Joe could be a world class trainer – no doubt. I will do what is the best for Nath because I know he can be so much better than last Saturday.”
Nathan, 26, faces a big rebuilding job after a convincing and devastating stoppage loss to the formidable Russian, with Vince reviewing all available options despite guiding Cleverly Jnr throughout his career.
Calzaghe, who retired in 2008 with an outstanding 46-0 record, is yet to dip his toes back into the sport since his final fight against Roy Jones Jr. and recently completed a short stint on Celebrity Masterchef in the UK.
The now 41 year-old was trained by his own father Enzo throughout his successful career as he reigned for an unprecedented 11 years as a WBO champion, although it remains to be seen whether an approach will be forthcoming for a link-up with the Cleverly’s in future.
