Evangelou brothers call in reinforcements with Jesse Reid Sr. training stint

Phil Jay 08/07/2013

Enfield fighters Chris and Andreas Evangelou are excited at the prospect of linking up with Hall of Fame trainer Jesse Reid next week after the brothers arranged to hook up with the American when he arrives in the UK with undefeated heavyweight Malik Scott.

Scott, 32, faces Dereck Chisora on July 20 in London and with Reid making the journey to the UK to be in the corner of his charge, the Evangelou pair have moved swiftly to book in some time with Reid next month after a Wildcard turn four years ago.

“Jesse Reid and Malik Scott will be flying to London for their fight at Wembley against Derrick Chisora and making final preparations at our gym Edmonton Eagles ABC,” Andreas explained.

“We have had a good Relationship with Jesse Reid and his son Jesse Jr. for a few years now and are all very happy to be working together again.

“With Jesse Sr. being a legendary Hall of Famer who’s trained 23 world champions including; Johnny Tapia and Roger Mayweather, having someone of that calibre in the camp is a huge boost for us and coming at the right time.

“This next year is going to be massive for team Evangelou with lots of things happening with both Chris and I in title contention. Since turning pro our team has made some very strong allies in the boxing world and with such big fights on the horizon the time is right to call in the reinforcements.

“We’ve trained with Jesse Snr and his son Jesse Jr. in the past and from experience can say he is the best coach we’ve worked with. It’s not luck that he has produced some of the best fighters in the world and we both know he has a lot that he can teach us.

“A few years ago in 2009 with him in my brothers corner just before he turned pro, Jesse and Chris cleaned up all of the up and coming pros in the WildCard, even impressing Freddie Roach and I believe that magic is about to happen again. We will be training out with Jesse in the states again at the end of the month at his gym in Burbank and even living with him whilst there. I don’t think it’s possible to have a better training camp than that and we’re really looking forward to it.”

Brother Chris then added: “It’s boosted our teams motivation as we know how experienced Jesse Reid Sr. is as a trainer. When I heard the news that he will be training Malik Scott at our gym it made my day. I cant wait to see him and speak to him again.”

Reid agreed to place Scott’s ever-growing reputation on the line against the unorthodox Chisora, with the knowledgeable coach believing the time was right to branch out of the USA for the first time.

Andreas believes that Scott can make a big splash on his side of the Atlantic and is keen on seeing the improving Philadelphian in action against one of Britain’s most seasoned heavyweights.

Malik Scott is a big, very talented heavyweight with skills and I’m looking forward to seeing him in action as I believe he can be the next big thing from the states in that division,” he stated.

“He’s also undefeated in 36 fights and I feel Chisora’s style is made for him. Throw in the expertise of Jesse Reid and the sky is the limit.”
