Pound for pound ranked and current WBC middleweight king Sergio Martinez is set to make his comeback from injury in the spring of next year.
Lewkowicz informed WBN that the Argentine will be back in the ring next March on the back of his controversial victory over Britain’s Martin Murray in Buenos Aires last April.
Martinez returned to his home country for the first time in eleven years to face Murray and scraped a points win despite being down twice in the fight and seemingly beaten on the night.
‘Maravilla’ will be 39 at the time of his next outing, suffered a reoccurrence of a serious knee injury in that fight that has kept him out of the ring previously. Martinez underwent surgery earlier this year in the hope of getting back to full fitness for 2014.
SERGIO MARTINEZ vs CHAVEZ 2
The new star of the division, Gennady Golovkin has been instantly linked to a clash with Martinez sometime in the next 18 months after his demolition job on Matthew Macklin.
Although a rematch with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. could be first on the agenda for the South American.
Chavez could conceivably move up to 168lbs before Martinez returns to action, though. But that may not necessarily mean that Golovkin would then come into play.
The veteran may need a warm-up before taking on the big-punching double world champion.
