Maccarinelli v Chioui heads to purse bids for vacant EU title

Former world cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli is in line to face a new foe for the vacant European Union light-heavyweight title after potential opponent Dariusz Sek pulled out of a fight.

The Pole decided to challenge Robert Woge for a fringe version of the IBF title at the weekend at short notice, losing out on points, and has now been replaced in the purse bids by Frenchman Hakim Chioui.

Chioui, 26, has been stopped three times in a 30-fight career so far, but is a former French title holder and can bang as 19 KO’s from his 26 wins suggests.

A deadline of June 25 has been set for promoters to gain control of the possible clash, with Maccarinelli previously linked to a rematch with Ovill McKenzie following his two round stoppage loss last year.

A chance at the EU title may well be a welcome distraction for the Swansea man as McKenzie recovers from the injury that kept him out of the return, although the rescheduling of that fight may take priority with promoter Frank Warren.
