Rugged Argentinian Marcos Maidana put himself right in the mix for a world title shot at 147lbs after halting Josesito Lopez in six rounds at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
The 29 year-old had too much power for Lopez in what was an evenly fought match-up throughout as both boxers had their moments in the fight. The end came when Maidana dropped the Riverside man before unloading as he got to his feet and referee Lou Moret jumped in to stop the contest, maybe a little prematurely at that.
Maidana was rocked himself in the clash showing his vulnerability remains there at welterweight when he takes a shot, although his own equalizer can turn a fight in an instant and this proved to be the case for Lopez.
‘Chino’ could now be in line to face the winner of the Paulie Malignaggi v Adrien Broner grudge match in the fall after the two battle it out for the WBA welterweight belt on June 22 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
