Andre Ward’s trainer Virgil Hunter has exclusively told World Boxing News that there has been no contact whatsoever from anyone representing Carl Froch and believes that the much-talked about rematch is not likely to happen.
Hunter, who was ringside in London as Froch defeated Mikkel Kessler in a rematch last month, has stated his interest in listening to any offers that came from Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn for what would be a money-spinning three-belt unfication at 168lbs.
“We haven’t heard anything from anyone associated with Froch on a another fight with Andre,” Hunter told World Boxing News.
“We also don’t expect to hear anything Froch’s fight with Kessler is two weeks old now.”
Nottingham-born Froch was making all the right noises folllowing his decision win over Kessler and both men were initially open to staging the fight in the US or the UK, but Hunter sees it a just bravado from the Briton.
“The cameras and microphones are off Froch and he can just slide back into his comfort zone and continue to hope this fight doesn’t come about,” said Hunter.
Ward, 29, is the current hold of the ‘super’ version of the belt Froch took from Mikkel Kessler at Wembley Arena, but has few options open to him after the WBC decided to bump him up to ‘Emeritus Champion’ – which the American rebuffed.
The ‘S.O.G’ was due to meet the winner of the upcoming Sakio Bika v Marco Periban clash on June 22 at the Barclays Center, although Ward is now seemingly out in the cold and may have to look at the next WBA challenger in line as he returns from injury.
Stanyslav Kashtanov currently holds the number one spot with the World Boxing Association, although negotiating to bring him out of the Ukraine and persuading American TV bosses that the fight is worthwhile both look lost causes.
Main rival Froch is potentially lining up a third fight with Kessler in the winter, which even rules out a return with the Dane for Ward, leaving ‘Cobra’ compatriots George Groves and James DeGale the next big names out there to challenge the division’s best.
