Schaefer: Ink dry on Floyd v Canelo, but Garcia-Matthysse won’t be support

Mayweather, 35, had previously tweeted the news on his social media site late last night, although no official word has come out from GBP until now – with the 152lb catchweight clash now confirmed for the MGM Grand on the 14th.

One thing that Schaefer did stipulate though, due to continued speculation amongst fans, is that any potential fight between WBC and WBA light-welterweight champion Danny Garcia and mandatory Lucas Matthysse would not take place on the same bill.

“Danny Garcia v Lucas Matthysse is huge, huge fight in it’s own right and will never take place on any undercard,” Schaefer told World Boxing News.

Garcia, 25, was present as Matthysse pummelled IBF 140lb champion Lamont Peterson in just three rounds in a recent non-title fight and has been ordered by the WBC to defend his title against the rugged Argentinian in the near future.

More on the Mayweather v Canelo undercard is expected soon.
