Hunter: Froch and Hearn all talk, they want no part of Ward – even in the UK!

Phil Jay 27/05/2013

Current trainer of the year Virgil Hunter has opened up to WBN in the wake of frenzied talk of his star fighter Andre Ward meeting Carl Froch in a high-profile rematch, possibly in the UK.

Hunter was ringside as Froch, 35, avenged one of only two defeats in his career against Mikkel Kessler in London on Saturday, after which the Nottingham fighter immediately turned his attention to a revenge mission with Ward – the other loss on his record.

Froch, who is now IBF and WBA champion ay 168lbs, believes he can call the shots and revealed his intentions are to propose a title fight with Ward on home soil, possibly at Wembley Stadium, although Hunter is sceptical about the Briton’s advances.

“Let’s be real about this, Eddie Hearn and Carl Froch have no intentions of meeting Andre in the ring even in the UK. Froch knows he would sustain a worse beating and get stopped in a rematch,” Hunter exclusively told World Boxing News today.

“It would be great if Froch stops using Dre’s name when he is afraid of the rematch. He cried for Kessler, but he shies from Andre. He is full of bravado when the microphone is in his face, but he doesn’t have the guts to tell his promoter to get on the phone.

“If they want the fight in the UK, well he found a way to get Kessler there. so like Andre said, pick up the phone or just admit you’re frightened and don’t have the heart to do it.”

29 year-old Ward is currently regaining fitness following shoulder surgery which has kept him out since his impressive victory over light-heavyweight champion Chad Dawson last September.

The WBC had recently switched the ‘S.O.G’ from full title holder at 168lbs to ‘Champion Emeritus’ – although Ward decided against accepting the downgrade and is currently with only the ‘super’ version of Froch’s WBA belt.

Ward v Froch II is certainly the logical fight for all, although the main predicament seems to be where the fight would take place.

With Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn having the swaying power of Sky Box Office PPV in Britain, that could make all the difference in negotiations, but as Ward is rated number one in world at the weight, the American will also want a big slice of the pie when the percentages are dished out.
