Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn has issued a swift response to Virgil Hunter’s comments on WBN today and has reiterated his and fighter Carl Froch’s stance that any rematch with Andre Ward will have to happen in the UK.
Hearn has manoeuvred ‘The Cobra’ into a prime position for a return with the only fighter Froch has failed to beat in his career and now believes that the new unified super-middleweight champion holds all the cards as Ward ponders a second meeting.
“Carl Froch is the money in the super-middleweight division right now and for that reason everyone is calling his name,” Hearn explained to World Boxing News.
“Andre Ward is a great fighter but lets be honest, the last time he saw a crowd like Saturday was at a pop concert.
“Ward has absolutely nowhere to go. Tell me one big money fight for him at 168? Carl has two belts and huge commercial pull here in the UK and that’s where we intend to stay right now.
“For now we will take out time and enjoy the moment,” he added.
Early indications are that both sides have interest in making the fight happen as WBA ‘super’ champion Ward looks to claim another world title on the back of the WBC’s recent decision to declare his coveted green belt vacant.
The two standout fighters of the division could make millions each from securing a clash on either side of the Atlantic, although Ward is now facing up to the fact that he only has one offer on the table to consider and a trip to the UK may have to be agreed upon to secure the fight.
