Former WBA cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev is back in hospital receiving treatment for the horrific injuries he suffered against Guillermo Jones on Friday, despite being initially discharged on Saturday.
The 33 year-old was in a terrible state when being stopped in eleven rounds by the Panamanian losing his belt in the process as his eye swelled up to an abnormal size due to repeated blows by Jones.
Manager Vlad Hrunov told R-Sport today: “He’s in the hospital right now. He doesn’t have big problems,” before adding that Lebedev had undergone a brain scan to see if there is any lasting damage.
People of a squeamish disposition would have been watching the Moscow fight through their hands for the duration of the contest as Lebedev was put in danger by his corner and the officials who allowed him to carry on too long.
Rumours are already surfacing that Lebedev is looking for an immediate rematch with Jones, 41, although the Russian should be focusing on recovering from their first meeting before thinking of a return.
