IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale is set to hand Briton Darren Barker a second world title opportunity in the summer as American network HBO consider the clash for their upcoming roster.
The Australian has pitched the possible fight to the broadcaster and if approved, ‘Real Deal’ Geale could be ready to announce the former European title holder as his next challenger before the end of the week.
Geale, 32, stunned all of Germany when unifying the 160lb titles by dethroning Felix Sturm in September last year, and although the Launceston fighter was stripped of the WBA version, is widely recognised as the number two in the division.
With pound for pound best Sergio Martinez out of commission, seemingly for the rest of the year, Geale has turned to a former opponent of the Argentinian in Barker, whom ‘Maravilla’ stopped in eleven rounds in 2011.
30 year-old Barker has since made a successful return from his maiden loss despite suffering his usual luck with injuries. Two wins at European level have extended his record to 25-1, although ‘Dazzling’ Darren is now looking to make that step up again and hopes to be given the green light by HBO to face Geale in another US bout.
