Murray: Martinez green belt win would be life changing for me

The St. Helens man is primed and ready to go into battle in a cauldron of opposition at the Velez Sarsfield stadium this weekend and is in the best shape of his life as he attempts to dethrone the Argentinian pound for pound star.

“It’s hard not to have a good camp when I’ve got such a great team behind me, so everything went really well at home and we’ve finished off sharpening up over here,” Murray told World Boxing News.

“I am the underdog in this fight and rightly so, but the fact that so many people have been writing me off has been a massive motivation for me.

“Victory this weekend will get me some big fights in the future and that’s all I’m interested in regardless of who the opponent may be.”

Murray, 30, knows will have to deal with 40,000 screaming Martinez fans, with just a handful of Brits making the long journey to South America, although the undefeated former Lonsdale belt holder is confident of pulling off an upset.

“It would mean the world for me to get my hands on that green belt,” emphasized Murray. “A win will be life changing for me and my family for all the right reasons so it will be a dream come true.”

38 year-old Martinez has lost just two of his 54 career contests and put away one of the stars on the division in Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last time out – despite being down and hurt in the final round.

That last session of domination by Chavez at the Thomas and Mack Center will give Murray hope in knowing that Martinez can be vulnerable as the underdog endeavours to break into world class and shake up the 160lb weight class.
