Eddie Hearn: Lee Purdy discussing Devon Alexander IBF title shot

IBF International welterweight champion Lee Purdy has emerged as the next candidate to face Devon Alexander in a surprise world title shot next month due to the Essex fighter’s number four ranking with the organisation.

After third placed Kevin Bizier turned down the chance to challenge Alexander as revealed by WBN today, Matchroom Boss Eddie Hearn has now confirmed that Purdy is in negotiations to fight the American next.

“We have been offered the fight against Alexander for Lee Purdy and we are discussing it with Lee and the team to see where we go from here,” Hearn told World Boxing News.

25 year-old Purdy, nicknamed ‘Lights Out’ due to his solid punching power, has won his last four bouts via stoppage since losing a muted affair against Colin Lynes in 2011 and now stands on the verge of a clash with a two-weight world champion.

It’s hard to believe that only a year ago Purdy was claiming the English title against Adnan Amar, and although he will go in as a huge underdog if the fight comes off, no-one could deny the Colchester man a puncher’s chance of an upset.
