Lopez, 28, has not fought since losing out to Saul Alvarez in five rounds last September in a challenge for the Mexican’s WBC belt and is hopeful of getting back in contention with a win over Maidana in the summer.
“Maidana is a great fight,” Lopez told World Boxing News. “Definitely a fight that will test me, but one that I can win.
“He’s a tough strong fighter, but it’s the tools that I have that I feel can make the difference and get me closer to my life long dream of becoming a world champion. To do that I have to fight the best fighters in the world.”
The clash is tentatively pencilled in to take place at the Home Depot Center in Carson on June 8 if both sides can reach an agreement, with Erislandy Lara v Alfredo Angulo also rumoured for the bill.
