Schaefer: Peterson v Mattysse headlines May 18, Alexander v Brook co-main event
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has confirmed to World Boxing News that IBF light-welterweight champion Lamont Peterson will defend his title against Argentinian hardman Lucas Matthysse.
The 140lb clash will headline the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on May 18 and will see the twice-postponed bout between Devon Alexander and Kell Brook as the co-feature contest on what is already a mouth-watering card with the two fights finalised.
Contrary to some reports, Schaefer did not yet fully confirm that a 140lb tournament is in play though, with some media outlets pitting the winner of Peterson v Matthysse against the victor of Danny Garcia v Zab Judah in the fall (autumn).
“That’s the plan, but nothing is done in that regard,” Schaefer stipulated to World Boxing News when asked about the tournament situation.
The chief support between Alexander and Brook was originally meant to take place in January firstly, before being rescheduled for February. Both fighters suffered respective injuries in the build-up meaning the two rivals will now settle their differences in late spring.
