Channel 5 negotiating to broadcast Fury v Cunningham live

It has now been made public that Channel 5 are in talks to broadcast Tyson Fury v Steve Cunningham on April 20 live from Madison Square Garden in New York, although nothing has been mentioned of a new deal with Hennessy Sports.

Promoter Mick Hennessy struck an agreement with the station to showcase his fighters live on the channel from 2011, but it seems that both sides hit a wall in contract talks once a radical shake-up by Channel 5 was announced earlier this month.

The likes of Hennessy star fighter’s James DeGale and Chris Eubank Jr. saw their recent show scrapped on the back of the failing talks and with both not yet fighting on the US bill next month, it’s not guaranteed that they will be featured again with the broadcasters.

The two face an uncertain TV future without coverage and Hennessy could now be forced to look at options elsewhere to have the rest of his talented stable given the showcase they deserve.

More is set to come to light once negotiations to show Fury’s American debut have concluded, although the big heavyweight bout may just be a one-off screening – rather than a means to an end for a renewal of Hennessy’s contract.
