Ricky Burns announcement within a week, Golden Boy linked
WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns is not short of suitors since declaring his intention to leave Frank Warren this week, with Golden Boy UK the latest to be touted as a possible destination for the tough Scot.
Burns, 29, severed ties with Warren following a third fight collapse in three months on Wednesday night and now has a whole host of big name promoters chasing his coveted signature.
According to Scottish news site STV, who seem to have inside knowledge of the Burns’ comings and goings, American giants Golden Boy have made an approach to add the lightweight to their newly-formed UK stable.
GBP already promote the Coatbridge fighter’s main rival at 135lbs in WBC title holder Adrien Broner, and it may be a direct attempt by Oscar De La Hoya’s outfit to make sure the unification fight happens after two years of stalling.
Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom stable, who have been snapping up all of Britain’s top fighters in recent times, would certainly have an interest in events surrounding Burns, with a decision set to be made by early next week, according to manager Alex Morrison.
