WBC light-middleweight champion Saul Alvarez is set for a huge unification with Miguel Cotto conqueror Austin Trout on the upcoming ‘Cinco de Mayweather’ promotion in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 4.
The undefeated Mexican superstar made the announcement late last night that the fight was close and could potentially be announced as early as next week if headliner Floyd Mayweather gives the go ahead.
Alvarez, 22, has long been linked with a clash against the WBA title holder since Trout comprehensively out-pointed Cotto in December to improve to 26-0 and both fighters will now aim to add another world title to their haul.
27 year-old Trout’s breakthrough put an end to a much-revered fight between ‘Canelo’ and Cotto, although two young champions putting their perfect records on the line may now have slightly more appeal with some fans.
American Trout already holds a victory over Rigoberto Alvarez in recent years, giving younger brother Saul the opportunity to exact a family revenge to add more spice to the imminent MGM Grand battle.
Top of the bill is widely expected to be Mayweather against mandatory challenger Robert Guerrero, making it a Mexican double on the Latino holiday weekend, with undercard places rumoured for Andres Gutierrez and Hasim Rahman Jr.
