Banks injury ends Mitchell return

The World Boxing Council’s number three ranked heavyweight Johnathon Banks is out of his scheduled February 16 bout with rival Seth Mitchell after the Detroit-native injured his thumb in training.

The 30 year-old knocked out the previously unbeaten Mitchell, also 30, in the second round of their November meeting at the Boardwalk Hall, but will now have to wait to get a second opportunity.

Banks has lifted himself up the WBC rankings to the number three position with his recent exploits and was on the cusp of a title eliminator against the winner of Chris Arreola v Bermane Stiverne until the unfortunate incident.

Promoters Golden Boy are set to make an announcement on whether a replacement will be called in for Mitchell at late notice as the postponement puts a huge dent in the Adrien Broner v Gavin Rees main event.
