WBC plans to make the upcoming bout between number one and two ranked super-middleweights in the world, Nikola Sjekloca and Sakio Bika for the full belt has now been shelved.
Speaking to WBN last month, President Jose Sulaiman originally announced his intention to vacate the title currently held by Andre Ward and bump him up to ‘Emeritus’ status following the American’s decision to undergo surgery – amidst fears that the champion would be out for a prolonged period.
Former IBF title holder Lucian Bute was even being lined up to possibly face the winner in May for Ward’s green belt, although the Super-Six winner is set to be ready to defend his title in the summer and will retain his title until then.
Sjekloca v Bika, which takes place at the Boardwalk Hall on the Adrien Broner v Gavin Rees WBC lightweight title clash a week on Saturday, will now revert to a final eliminator for a challenge against Ward sometime in the next few months.
Bute, 32, is currently being considered for a chief support slot on the unification between Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch, but it now seems the Canadian will have to seek other avenues to claim another world title shot.
