Lucian Bute out for six weeks after surgery

Former IBF super-middleweight champion Lucian Bute has undergone eyebrow surgery to remove ‘extensive’ tissue under the skin and faces six weeks without sparring.

The 32 year-old, who has been linked to a WBC title bout in May, has struggled with the injury for his last two fights after Carl Froch first inflicted it in his crushing win over the Canadian.

Bute then aggravated it in his comeback win over Denis Grachev at the end of last year and will hope to be clear of the ailment upon his return to the ring, possibly on the Froch v Kessler undercard.

The Romanian-born fighter could now meet the winner of the Sakio Bika v Nikola Sjekloca bout next month if Andre Ward does not recover in time after he, himself went under the knife to correct a serious shoulder problem.
