Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has confirmed to WBN that welterweight clash between WBA title holder Paul Malignaggi and Marcos Maidana is not in the works for the champion’s next fight.
Malignaggi, 32, had originally been close to an agreement with three-weight king ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley for his next scheduled contest, although the New Yorker had then switched his attention to Maidana after a negative response from fans.
41 year-old Mosley may now be back in the frame for the spring title challenge, although the WBA have ordered Malignaggi to negotiate with mandatory Diego Chaves and the Argentinian may now have overtaken the veteran in the race.
Schaefer was pretty blunt in damning rumours of a possible bout when contacted by WBN about the fight between Malignaggi and Maidana, who had both expressed their interest in facing each other on a possible April date.
There had been some suggestions that the fight would be added to the newly-moved Danny Garcia v Zab Judah bill on April 27 at the Barclays Center, which could still be case for Malignaggi – but not with Maidana in the opposite corner.
