Austin Trout to find out Sunday if ‘Canelo’ unification is on for May 4

Speaking exclusively to WBN, Trout explained that he will find out on Sunday whether the fight is confirmed, news which comes on the back of Richard Schaefer confirming to WBN that an announcement for the card will happen next week.

Trout, 27, upset huge favourite Miguel Cotto in December to successfully defend his WBA title for the fourth time and has constantly been linked to a meeting with Mexican superstar Alvarez ever since.

If the clash is finalized this weekend, that would almost certainly mean that Floyd Mayweather will face Robert Guerrero in his mandatory WBC title defence, unless a late bid by Timothy Bradley can upset the applecart.

‘Canelo’ himself had few options for the bout in late spring after Trout ended Cotto’s hopes of halting Alvarez’s unbeaten run, after which veteran Cornelius Bundrage signed to defend his IBF belt against Ishe Smith.

An Alvarez v Trout clash seemed the only viable option open to Golden Boy Promotions and barring any last minute hitches, should be established by early next week – along with Mayweather’s 44th career opponent.
