Carlo Moretti, number two to Bob Arum at Top Rank Promotions, has told WBN this week that the continued furore over a fifth fight between long-time rivals Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez in September is premature.
Top Rank’s two biggest stars, who met in an explosive fourth encounter last December ending in a crushing Marquez KO win, have been linked, and in some reports nailed on to meet again in the autumn – although Moretti was adamant that the fight is still miles away from being agreed.
“The fight (between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Marquez) is so far off,” Moretti told World Boxing News. “No serious consideration has been given to anything yet.”
That statement from Moretti comes on the back some reports that the fighters are already in talks about seeking an alternative venue outside of the US for tax reasons, something that is somewhat hasty with the timescale involved.
What we do know now is that this coming April is a possibility for both Pacquiao and Marquez to face alternative opponents in a warm-up, but whether that even comes off right now is anyone’s guess.
Fight fans are desperate to see the two warriors in the ring again, if anything to gauge whether the ‘Pacman’ is still capable of overcoming a foe he has beaten twice before, as a super-fight with pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. hangs in the balance.
