The 32 year-old Nigerian, who based himself in the UK, defeated Ali Chebah in a final eliminator last September and had seemingly been overlooked by the WBC as Erik Morales and Danny Garcia avoided the unbeaten fighter.

“I don’t have to wait for Garcia if he is running scared and doesn’t want to fight me. I just want to fight for the title be it against Matthysse for the interim WBC belt,” Olusegun told World Boxing News.

The fight with Matthysse is now set to take place in the United States this fall, with the winner then expected to either challenge champion Danny Garcia or be elevated to full champion if the American vacates and keeps the WBA version.

Matthysse, 29, impressively dispatched of three-weight champion Humberto Soto, albeit with a healthy weight advantage last time out and boasts 29 stoppages in 31 of his professional contests so far.

A venue is expected to be announced soon alongside the official announcement, with the bout touted to take place on September 8.
