Tapia scores 59th career win
Three-weight world champion Johnny Tapia scored his third straight victory since returning from a three-year lay-off after out-pointing former world light-flyweight champion Mauricio Pastrana over eight rounds.
The 44 year-old was knocked down in the sixth, although the knockdown was questionable, but came back to put ‘Indio Boy’ on the canvas himself in the final round.
Judges’ scores of 77-73, 77-73 and 76-74 improve Tapia’s record to 59-5-2 and he will be looking to gain one final shot at a world title in the near future. The bout took place at lightweight, but Tapia could easily make the super-featherweight limit if necessary and will have his eye on one of the big guns in both divisions before he takes his final bow.
