Voting for Floyd Mayweather's next opponent has taken another twist on Friday as Marcos Maidana regained the lead over Amir Khan despite the Briton pulling back a 14% swing during the week.

Khan was holding the slightest of advantages on Thursday night as the poll topped 20,000 plus votes, although Maidana has rallied his troops and now holds the advantage with just the weekend left until the announcement of the winner.

Mayweather's poll will officially end on Sunday February 9 at 11:59pm to cement who will be the 46th fighter to attempt to end the long-standing unbeaten record of the best boxer on the planet. The fight will take place on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and once done and dusted in the early hours of Monday, will end months of speculation as to who Mayweather will face in his next showdown.

There seemed to be only one runner in the race from last October if the British press were to be believed, only for a backlash from a large portion of fans prompting Mayweather to add WBA champion Maidana into the mix.

If the Argentine can stay on top for the next three days, a massive unification match at 147 will be sealed, which means latest opponent and Mayweather friend Adrien Broner will miss out on his immediate rematch.

Maidana inflicted a first defeat on 'The Problem' late in 2013 as had activated a release clause that stipulated the two would fight again at the earliest opportunity. Obviously a Mayweather two-belt fight takes first priority and Broner would then be forced to wait his turn.
