Tyson Fury responds to Dillian Whyte’s ‘cowards’ jibe on Deontay Wilder fight

Whyte drew attention to himself over the weekend by stating Fury and Wilder were ‘cowards’ and ‘clowns’ for agreeing to fight when the Londoner was frozen out by the World Boxing Council for not adhering to the mandatory terms.

‘The Bodysnatcher’ could have earned himself a crack at Wilder with a win over Ortiz, although chose to fight Joseph Parker in a contest that effectively meant nothing on the title scene. Whyte also rejected a final eliminator with the IBF against Kubrat Pulev in Bulgaria.

Following Whyte’s disdain in seeing Fury land a shot at the famous green belt, the ‘Gypsy King’ gave a full-blooded response and stated in no certain terms that his former sparring partner backed away from facing the required fighters to secure a championship chance.

Fury is now readying himself to reveal the full details of what is expected to be a Las Vegas Pay-Per-View battle with Wilder at the T-Mobile Arena in November as Whyte contemplates what might have been.

One saving grace for ‘The Villain’ could be the WBO’s recent comments to WBN over a potential mandatory shot at Anthony Joshua.

The WBO said they are likely to order an eliminator for Joshua within 180 days of the Alexander Povetkin fight, which would see Whyte and Jarrell Miller as the first two contenders to be asked.

With both signed to Matchroom Boxing, the Whyte v Miller could be an easy one to make and see the victor take on Joshua at some point in 2019.

“Regarding Mr. Alexander Povetkin, please be advised that although Mr. Povetkin is ranked number one in the WBO Heavyweight Division, he is not Anthony Joshua’s WBO Mandatory Challenger,” the WBO exclusively told World Boxing News.

“Further, the sanctioning body will probably order a WBO Heavyweight Elimination Bout to determine who will be the designated Mandatory Challenger in the aforementioned division,” they added.
