EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Edwards to concentrate on flyweight, allow Kal Yafai UK clash to simmer

In an exclusive interview with WBN, Edwards talked about his plans for the remainder of 2018.

“We’re just waiting at the minute for confirmation on a fight, management is working on something; hopefully it will be a big fight down at flyweight,” Edwards exclusively told World Boxing News.

“I’m moving back down for a big potential world title fight so we’re just waiting for things to get done behind the scenes.”

Last time out, Edwards secured an impressive knockout victory over Anthony Nelson on the Lewis Ritson-Josh Kelly double-header card in Newcastle.

Edwards promised and delivered a boxing lesson to show he is more than capable and taking on the bigger names.

“I’m getting myself back into training and preparing for when that day comes and we’re ready to hit full systems go,” he explained. “I’m in that tick-over stage but it’s doing all the work and getting all the team around solid and on the same page.”

Asked about the decision to move back down to flyweight, Edwards replied: “It was a choice by all of us. The opportunity arose and I’m fighting comfortably, the timing has all come together so it’s just one of those things.

“I realised in my last fight that I could have made the flyweight limit – when I was weighing in I was actually laughing at myself how I could just do it.

“I was like shall I make it for a joke, just for a laugh to let everyone know but my coach was like no don’t be silly, there’s no point taking any more out of you.

“I put in a performance like I did and it showed how strong I could have been at the weight. When I woke up in the morning, I didn’t exceed the 10lb weight limit which is for the IBF title so it was like f*** it.

“I might as well go down and win a title and when I move up my stock will be higher and the fight with Kal Yafai (at super-flyweight) is not far away then because it’s two world champions going together in Britain, it’s a massive thing.”

For the time being, Edwards is focused solely on his upcoming fight in October.

“There are endless opportunities, I’ve just got to focus on this upcoming fight and wait for everything to get finalised and that could be my pinnacle moment.

“The tilting point of my whole career where it could just go bang, you don’t know what’s going to happen.

“I could go on and win that world title and after that have a defence and then unify, you don’t know what’s going to happen with Paddy Barnes and his fight this weekend. There are going to be endless opportunities but I just need to get this finalised and go on to win it.

“I’m back in October and I only fought in June, that was a good performance – I like to have a full camp; especially if its a big fight.

“I want a long period of time to prepare properly and I don’t want to be preparing and fighting halfway through.

“I learned that mistake from the Casimero fight when I fought six weeks before, I felt a bit overtrained because I went straight from a fight and straight back into camp for another fight,” he added.
