EXCLUSIVE: Manager Egis Klimas updates on Usyk v Bellew talks, weight class and potential venue

Usyk and Bellew both expressed interest in the fight after the Ukrainian won the inaugural World Boxing Super Series tournament and since then contact has been made and reciprocated.

Asked for an update on the weight class and venue for the clash, Klimas concurred with Bellew’s recent comments that a fight for all the 200 pound belts in the UK makes the most sense.

“If we will reach agreement with Mr. Hearn to fight Bellew for our team it doesn’t make difference at what weight the fight takes place,” Klimas exclusively told World Boxing News.

“I assume Tony Bellew would like to try to get the titles currently in possession of Aleksandr Usyk, so I guess it would be cruiserweight.”

Asked whether he’s on board with handing Bellew home advantage, Klimas replied: “Yes, why not. Aleksandr has been fighting the last few of his fights on opponents territory and doing it successfully.

“We are happy to fight in the UK,” he added.

Bellew, speaking on talkSPORT as the WBC Emeritus champion, ratified his goal to challenge for Usyk’s five belts (WBC, IBF, WBA, WBO, RING) as the mandatory challenger in 2018.

“Personally I want to do the fight, I’d love the fight,” Bellew told talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil.

“Usyk is the first man to have all four belts around his waist and the Ring Magazine belt, and the first name out of his mouth is some fat Scouser.

“I’ll chin him! No two ways about it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not naïve and I don’t for one minute believe I’m a better boxer than Oleksandr Usyk, but what I can do is I can draw him into mistakes.

“I don’t care what anybody says, I’m a far bigger puncher than Murat Gassiev, I only need one – I’ve showed that over the last few years.

“I’m happy. He wants to fight in England, Eddie (Hearn, Bellew promoter) has already made calls.

“If it’s solely down to me, it’s happening. I want to see it happen and I want it before the end of the year. And if it is Usyk, it’ll be my last fight ever,” said ‘The Bomber’.
