FLASHBACK: When Aleksandr Usyk and Joe Joyce went to war

Usyk, an Olympic gold medallist and former world amateur champion, displayed amazing technique, footwork and elusiveness to completely dominate the number two cruiserweight in the world.

With a possible move up to heavyweight on the horizon, WBN looks back to when Usyk was part of the Ukrainian team competing in the World Series of Boxing and going up against other fighter who now trade punches in the top division.

One of those was current Commonwealth champion Joe Joyce, who Usyk waged war with back in 2013.

Speaking at the time after Ukraine qualified for the final, Usyk said: “Personally, I enjoyed my performance against Medzhidov. It was a challenging fight and I think I did well. He was my toughest opponent but I have to say that Joyce of the Lionhearts proved a tough nut to crack as well.”

Ukraine eventually lost the Series to Kazakhstan in closely-fought finale 6-5.

It’s not unfathomable that Usyk and Joyce could meet again at 200 pounds plus at some point in 2019 or beyond.
