EXCLUSIVE: Robbie Davies Jr. on how the highs and lows of Michal Syrowatka saga helped him move forward

The new Matchroom fighter (16-1 12 kos) picked up his first loss against former Olympian Syrowatka in 2017 in what was a big upset.

The 28-year-old would be the last person to make excuses for a loss, but there is no doubt there were factors in play which affected him.

“Obviously everything was going on before that fight. My dad got rushed into hospital and never came out, he died. That was obviously playing on my mind,” Davies Jr. exclusively told World Boxing News.

“The week before the fight I had diarrhea and I tried all the old remedies of eating rice and bananas, but obviously by doing that it came off my diet and I had eight pounds to lose two days before the fight.

“It showed in the fight, I ran out of steam after six or seven rounds. I didn’t look as big and as physically imposing as I normally do,” he added.

The power-punching Liverpudlian has now turned a corner since, avenging the reverse with a spectacular knockout and signing with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom.

“I just look at is as a blessing in disguise. The things I have done since I took that loss – I wouldn’t have done if I hadn’t of lost that fight,” Davies said. “It’s one of those things. I could of scraped through that fight, because even on my worst days I can beat these kids, I don’t need to train that hard.

“But because of that loss, it made me realise how many levels I have to go through because that 70% version of me can fail. So I need to make sure that every fight now I am the best version of me.”

Davies Jr. can continue his upward trajectory when he faces off against Glenn Foot in Newcastle for the British and Commonwealth super-lightweight titles, in Newcastle this October.
