EXCLUSIVE: Michael Conlan praises World Boxing Super Series concept, open to future entry

The 26-year-old (7-0 5 KO’s) has a homecoming fight to deal with on Saturday against Brazilian Adeilson Dos Santos in Belfast, but if he gets through that he can start looking towards the top end of the division.

The WBSS has been a big success in its first installment, with the cruiserweight and super middleweight versions making a big impression on the boxing world.

Now it has been announced that the super lightweight and bantamweight weight divisions will be the next competitions to take place.

When asked if he would like to be involved in a featherweight version, Conlan exclusively told World Boxing News: “I would definitely love to involve myself, I think the concept is great.

“If all the belts were in it why not – why wouldn’t I want to involve myself in it? You would have the chance to be the undisputed champion of the division.”

Conlan had a decorated amateur career, which included winning an Olympic bronze medal and world championship gold, and was controversially knocked out of the Rio Olympics before he could add to his haul.

He has shown no problems translating that amateur success to the professional ranks.

On whether or not a WBSS would come too early in his career if it was in the next year, Conlan said: “if I was in the position that they would have me 100%, I would throw my name into the hat.

“But you have to be in the right position. Everything about boxing is about timing and beating the right guy at the right time.

“If it came down to it and I was the right guy at the right time then I would definitely be up for it.”

Conlan will be supported on his homecoming bill by an all Dublin battle between Jono Carroll and Declan Geraghty, as well as Jack Catterall facing off against hometown favourite Tyrone McKenna.
