WATCH: Oscar De La Hoya explains how he saved GGG v Canelo 2 deal from collapse

Handing ‘GGG’ an ultimatum of 42.5% of the split to be agreed by last Wednesday at 12pm PT, the deadline came and went without Golovkin and promoter Tom Loeffler giving their blessing.

De La Hoya then added another 2.5% from his personal coffers to their offer and Golovkin duly signed on to face Canelo again on September 15 in Las Vegas.

Speaking about the tense time, De La Hoya told The TMZ Sports Show: “I actually came out with my own money to bridge the gap and make this fight happen.

“GGG wanted a bigger piece of the pie. It was a matter of a few million dollars. I couldn’t get it from Canelo’s side because he was gonna stick to his guns … so I had to come up with the difference.”

Golovkin has reportedly issued his own terms for the return clash by stating the pair will NOT come face-to-face during the build-up.

The animosity has been cranked up a notch due to Canelo’s suspension and the collapse of a May 5 battle, which ultimately cost Golovkin the pound for pound number one spot to Vasyl Lomachenko.
