Golovkin v Canelo 2 is effectively on hold for the foreseeable future unless the Mexican lowers his demands, which equate to the champion getting a far less paycheck than the challenger.
Golden Boy are adamant Canelo deserves more money than Golovkin, despite the pair fighting out a controversial draw which most media personnel saw as a victory for the Kazakh.
Add to that the fact that Golovkin earned pound for pound number one status after Andre Ward’s retirement until Vasyl Lomachenko recently overhauled him.
An equal split of the pot does widely seem like the correct agreement moving forward and Loeffler says a deal will be out of reach until Canelo backs down from his 65 percent stipulation.
“All Gennady came back with is that, ‘I just want a fair split, I want a 50-50 split. I’m the champion,’” Loeffler told The Press Enterprise.
“We made a lot of concessions for the first fight, was a very low percentage for Gennady. We made a lot of concessions for the rematch after Gennady proved his value.
“But Canelo, for whatever reason, was insisting on still having a huge advantage. … It was 65-35 percent for the rematch and Gennady thinks that’s just not fair.
“Taking 35 percent as the champion is just not fair,” he added.
Canelo looks likely to return from his ban in September against Gary O’Sullivan, whilst Golovkin will now be ordered to defend his belts against Sergiy Derevyanchenko in an IBF mandatory bout.
Should Golovkin fail to agree with Canelo and not follow through with Derevyanchenko, ‘GGG’ runs the risk of dropping one of his titles and ruining his quest to hold all the belts at 160.
The only other option open to Golovkin would be a jump to 168 and an immediate attempt at a two-weight championship.
