Dillian Whyte offers Deontay Wilder solution to Joshua v Povetkin mandatory order

Despite current holder Manuel Charr being scheduled to defend the strap against Fres Oquendo, Whyte says he was offered the chance to fight for the championship by the WBA.

Should Povetkin be in agreement to sign on for at least a Whyte eliminator (as the title is not available), the move would be give Anthony Joshua enough time to battle Deontay Wilder in a massive five-belt undisputed unification.

Since defeating Lucas Browne, Whyte has been linked to a number of fights, only one of which is thought to be out of reach (against Wilder himself).

“Everything is up in air at the minute, because there’s so much options and there’s lots of things going on,” Whyte told Sky Sports.

“The options are Deontay Wilder, a rematch with Anthony Joshua, possibly fighting Kubrat Pulev for a final eliminator and then I become mandatory challenger for Joshua, or maybe a voluntary fight.”

Revealing the strange WBA offer, which goes against the Charr v Oquendo fight, Whyte added: “The WBC want me to probably fight a final eliminator against someone, which we don’t know yet.

“We’re trying to get them to enforce the mandatory and the WBA has come out a few days ago and said they want me to fight for their regular WBA world title,” he said.

Joshua v Povetkin has been ordered by the WBA to take place by September 1st, with the current heavyweight ruler having less than a month to negotiate with the Russian.

Should the WBA threaten to strip Joshua for fighting Wilder instead, it’s thought the Briton would then be forced to leave the biggest fight in boxing on the shelf until later in the year.

Even then, Whyte facing Pulev in an IBF eliminator further complicates the Joshua situation as the 2012 Olympic gold medallist would then have to face the winner.
