Canelo vows to ‘increase precautions’ in future, still wants Golovkin in next fight

A Nevada State Athletic Commission complaint, stemming from an investigation into TWO positive tests for banned substance Clenbuterol (largely found in Mexican meat), was too great to fend off in time for the contest next month.

Despite Canelo pleading his innocence, the NSAC are pushing for a one-year ban – possibly reduced to six months – meaning the 27 year-old may not be able to compete again until September.

Vowing to clear his name, Canelo made a public statement to the press on Tuesday outlining his intentions to be more careful.

“I am truly shocked by what has happened and I lament that this has caused people to have doubts about my integrity. I have always been a clean fighter,” Alvarez said in a statement released by Golden Boy Promotions.

Addressing the press, Canelo added: “I first got the call from Eric Gomez – ‘you tested positive. My first reaction was, ‘there has to be a mistake.’

“I am sad and feel powerless that this fight can not happen now. I have nothing to hide. I want to be transparent.

“I will do whatever I need to do to demonstrate I have never (intentionally) taken this substance. I have always operated as a clean fighter. I have always taken clean substances.

“I respect the sport unconditionally and would never do anything to tarnish something I have given so many sacrifices for. It saddens me that people are accusing me of doing something improper.

“From here on out, I will take increased precautions to ensure this will never happen again. This hit me hard. If it helps other athletes to clear their name. I wish it hadn’t been me.”

On Golovkin’s damning media conference on the situation, the two-weight world champion said: “What Golovkin or his team say does not bother me at all. They’re not experts, doctors.”

Oscar De La Hoya backed up his man, by saying: “Canelo is as clean as they come. We strongly feel Canelo is one of most honorable fighters.”

During the press gathering, Canelo also said he still wants to fight Golovkin in his next bout, which will probably be on September 15 in Las Vegas – at the earliest.
