After using the opening session to figure out his opponent, Fowler displayed a ruthlessness from the second round onwards that saw him land several meaningful body attacks that would take their toll as the fight wore on.
Dembele was stopped in the fifth session, and Fowler’s trainer, Dave Coldwell was very satisfied with his young charge’s work.
“I’m happy with his progress,” buzzed Coldwell in the aftermath.
“The stuff I want him to do, he’s doing it, and that is what a trainer wants to see from his fighter. He went in there with an ambitious kid who was full of belief, but after feeling Anthony’s power, it became obvious that he knew he wasn’t anywhere near the level Anthony is capable of operating on.
“There was so much from him that we had worked on in the gym so I’m pleased that he’s taking on board the advice I’m giving him because if it clicks for Fowler and he continues to apply himself the way he has been then I think you’re looking at a very bright future.”
Next up for Fowler is an outing in his home city on April 21st as he provides support for Amir Khan’s homecoming. Coldwell is relishing the next test.
“It’s all about learning and keeping him busy during this stage of his career. I thought last week’s fight went better than expected as he’s only been sparring for three weeks after recovering from his hand injury so it’ll be interesting to see if he can build on that as he continues his education.
“I’m extremely happy with the direction he’s heading in, and as long as he keeps listening and working on what he needs to then his climb up the rankings should be an entertaining one.”
