McGregor posted on social media that Mayweather was likely to stay retired, rather than meet him in a UFC rematch of their boxing contest last year, although Floyd Sr. says a crossover is on the cards.
“The way I see it, I have to believe that this is where it’s going,” Floyd Sr. told the Mayweather Boxing Channel.
On whether Floyd Jr. should make the move, Mayweather brought up the fact the cash on offer could be too good to turn down despite the 40 year-old already earning almost a billion dollars in the sport.
“He has enough money and he’s got enough to live until his life runs out,” pointed out Mayweather Sr. “The money he’s got, he’s got enough money; it’s crazy money. He’s his own man though, that’s the one thing about him.
“I’m gonna tell you the truth about it. I think he can win a few fights, but I think it’s best to leave it alone. You can do your own thing, but you’re in somebody else’s playground now and holes and stuff are in there. You just can’t do that.
“Don’t get me wrong, I believe he can beat some fighters like the same as he did with the other guy, but it ain’t worth it.
“Anytime you’ve done what he’s done, there ain’t no other way he can go right now but backward, that’s the only way he can go right now,” he added.
Should Mayweather make it official, it’s likely he’d employ a recognized MMA coach to oversee any contest in the octagon, although Floyd Sr. is expected to be part of any future camp.
More should come to light over the next few weeks as a date in Las Vegas this summer would be ideal for both with McGregor ready to make a decision on his future.
The Irishman hasn’t defended his UFC title since entering talks with Mayweather back in 2016 and still has a mandatory situation to sort out with President Dana White.
