Joyce secured a first round knockout against the unheralded Rudolf Jozic at York Hall last-week, and is being touted for a fight against veteran campaigner Chisora on the undercard of Bellew v Haye II, in what would be a big step-up in class.
The rumour-mill started circulating when Joyce, and David Haye – Joyce’s promoter appeared to strike a deal with Chisora at the Lawrence Okolie v Isaac Chamberlain show, captured by photos published by WBN.
Sam Sexton, the current British heavyweight champion, spoke regarding his thoughts on the potential match-up.
“I think it would be too soon for him they’re obviously trying to push him on quick and I think he’s the same age as me now,” Sexton exclusively told World Boxing News.
“I mean he’s not bad, is he? – But maybe they’re just trying to push him on a bit too quick. They are possibly trying to take a gamble and if it works, it works but if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”
Sexton, who picked up the Lonsdale belt last year with a unanimous decision victory over Gary Cornish, is set to defend the belt on may 12th against Hughie Fury live on Channel 5.
On the likelihood of the Joyce v Chisora fight happening Sexton said: “Obviously what they will do, is his promoter David will call everybody out.
“Haye did the same to me. They’ll offer crap money as they know nobody’s going to fight for that kind of money. Then they can say they turned down the fight and to the general public it looks good on their part.”
On the possibility of defending his belt against Joyce at some point, Sexton added: “For somebody like me to fight him who’s just won a British title, I mean, if he’s going to fight me they’d be looking at paying me silly money as there’s absolutely nothing to gain for me whatsoever.
“if you beat him then he’s only had two fights anyway and if you lose you are s*** and were never any good anyway,” pointed out Sexton.
